2019 NELC Academy
April 25-26, 2019 – San Diego, CA

application deadline:  December 14, 2018

The National Employment Law Council ("NELC") invites applications for selection as Fellows to the 2019 NELC Academy in San Diego, CA on April 25-26, 2019. NELC is a non-profit organization charged with enriching minority bar members who represent management in the field of labor and employment law.

The NELC Academy is open to minority attorneys with less than four years of experience practicing management-side labor and employment law. The NELC Academy provides advanced skills training, exposes Fellows to NELC’s national network of experienced minority labor and employment attorneys, fosters mentoring relationships, promotes NELC to attorneys who will soon be eligible for membership, and creates a pipeline for future NELC leaders.

All NELC Academy Fellows will have direct interaction with in-house attorneys and leading minority labor and employment defense lawyers from across the country, and will be partnered with an experienced attorney mentor. Space in the 2019 NELC Academy will be limited to a maximum of 30 participants and is expected to be highly competitive; preference will be given to lawyers with 2-3 years in practice. Great weight is given to personal statements and letters of recommendation.

To apply for the NELC Academy, submit the following items no later than December 14, 2018:

      • Personal statement on what the applicant hopes to achieve by participating in the NELC Academy (maximum 500 words, in PDF format). The statement should include a self-assessment of the applicant's career growth challenges and a paragraph describing the qualities the applicant is looking for in a mentor relationship.
      • Applicant’s bio or resume (in PDF format).
      • Strong partner or client recommendation of applicant for the Academy (maximum 500 words, in PDF format).
      • The application must be endorsed by a member of the NELC Board of Directors. The endorsement may be in the form of a short email endorsing the application. Applicants may reach out directly to members of the Board of Directors or contact Samantha Woo at swoo@jonesday.com or (312) 269-4074 for assistance in doing so.
      • Returning Academy Fellows please contact Samantha Woo for application instructions.

A complete application package must be submitted by email to Richard Amador, at amador@sanchez-amador.com, no later than December 14, 2018. Early applications are strongly encouraged; late, incomplete or perfunctory application materials may not be considered. If you do not receive an email confirmation that your application has been received within 48 hours of submission, contact Priscilla Bejarano at bejarano@sanchez-amador.com  or (213) 514-8564.

Academy participation is underwritten by NELC and its sponsors. Registration is $250. (Applicants should contact Richard Amador if the registration fee is an issue). Academy Fellows or their employers are responsible for travel and accommodations. Fellows will be required to actively participate in an Academy-only LinkedIn group in the weeks before the Academy to facilitate full engagement in the program.

The NELC Academy will be held in conjunction with NELC’s annual comprehensive labor and employment law conference from April 24-26, 2019 in San Diego. Academy applicants need not be members of NELC.

NELC Academy – April 25 & 26, 2019 – San Diego, CA

Feedback from 2018 NELC Academy Fellows:

I absolutely loved my NELC Academy experience. I feel so very fortunate to have had the opportunity to participate. The planners and speakers seemed genuinely interested in our development and in sharing their wisdom.  Hearing about the diversity of their experiences—life long firm-attorneys v. in-house v. some who've done both or moved between—was helpful.  There is not one path to "success," and that was evident in the speaker selection.

I can't say enough how much I appreciate the effort and time the Academy Committee spent in planning this, just because you want to see others like you thrive. I'm grateful to be a beneficiary of that effort, and it really makes me want to become another Alumni success story.

The Academy was truly an incredible and invaluable experience, and I'm so grateful to have had the privilege of participating this year.  I'm looking forward to continuing to maintain relationships with the Fellows in this year's Academy, as well as other NELC members I connected with.  Thank you so much to the entire NELC Academy Committee for all the hard work and thought that went into making this such a rewarding experience for me and the other Fellows!

I have already begun to implement the tangible skills I gained from the Academy into my day-to-day tasks.  I cannot emphasize enough how much I appreciate this truly valuable and unique opportunity. I have sung the Academy's praises internally at my firm, and hope that it will continue to sponsor associates' participation in the Academy in the future.

I truly enjoyed the Academy. I left feeling like I have a great community of attorneys at various levels and in various roles that I can learn from and build relationships with.  In the short time, I became friends with many of the Fellows and I look forward to continuing to nurture the NELC relationships formed.

Thank you so much for the opportunity to participate in the Academy. I feel so lucky to have met a great group of talented, thoughtful, and successful attorneys who have each other's best interest at heart. I truly appreciate all of your time and effort in putting together the sessions, the materials for the sessions, as well as the case intake summary and litigation checklists.

The NELC Academy truly is an invaluable experience, and one of the best career choices I have made thus far.  Thank you!
